Case Study: Meg the Terrier
Helping Meg Thrive: More Energy, Less Itching & A Happy, Healthy Welsh Terrier
"Hang on a second... I need to speak to someone who knows what they're talking about!"
Meg, sowing off her gleaming coat
When Lesley first contacted me about Meg, she wasn't looking for another quick fix.
Having owned a previous Welsh Terrier with significant ‘allergies’ that required expensive prescription diets, quarterly expensive Cytopoint injections and Apoquel tablets to turn off the immune system, she knew how difficult and costly it could be to manage chronic health issues.
This time, she wanted to take a different approach.
Her goal wasn't simply to treat symptoms, it was to understand why they were happening and give Meg the very best start to a long, healthy life. Not ned the vet visits or medications in the first place.
The Challenge
At just over two years old, Meg was already showing subtle signs that something wasn't quite right.
She would:
Tire easily and lag behind on walks.
Graze grass urgently and experience reflux.
Occasionally produce mucousy stools.
Rub her face, scratch her tummy and ears, and chew at her paws.
Have intermittent head shaking.
Occasionally scoot and suddenly look back towards her rear end.
Although these signs weren't severe enough to suggest serious illness at a vets, together they painted a picture of low-grade inflammation that was affecting her comfort, confidence and quality of life.
Alongside veterinary support and physiotherapy, Lesley wanted to optimise Meg's nutrition before these small issues grew.
Our Approach
We created a personalised nutrition plan designed to support Meg's gut, immune system and overall wellbeing, based on her breed.
Together we:
Introduced targeted gut-supporting supplements, including bone broth, prebiotics and functional herbs.
Transitioned her gradually onto a higher-quality, anti inflammatory cold-pressed diet.
Added fresh whole foods to naturally increase dietary diversity, supporting her biome.
Created a long-term protein rotation plan.
Worked alongside her physiotherapist to support her whole-body health.
Everything was introduced slowly to allow Meg's digestive system time to adapt.
The Results
The changes came surprisingly quickly.
Within the first few weeks, Lesley noticed:
Much more energy.
Significantly less grass eating (without urgency).
Reduced face rubbing.
No paw chewing.
Increased enthusiasm for walks.
"She was lagging behind on walks and now she isn't. She's much keener for walks and back to being very playful; she’s full of beans again!"
Meg’s calm focus meant she was much easier to train after changing her diet too.
A Dog Who Looks as Good as She Feels
As Meg continued to transition onto her new diet, the improvements kept coming.
Her coat developed an incredible shine.
She reached and maintained her ideal weight due to reduced inflammation.
Her stools became consistently well formed.
Her face rubbing became minimal.
Her energy levels stayed high.
"She's a picture of health at the moment!"
Even Meg's veterinary team noticed.
"The shine on her coat is absolutely incredible. She's the perfect weight. She looks a picture of health."
Building Confidence Around Fresh Feeding
Like many dog owners, Lesley initially felt nervous about introducing fresh foods.
By taking a gradual, practical approach, she quickly became confident preparing safe meals and rotating ingredients safely.
"I enjoy it. I love doing her breakfast now! A little bit of this and that and it looks lovely."
"I'm feeling more and more confident about what she can have, what I can give and what to stay away from."
Supporting Recovery Beyond Nutrition
During our time working together, Meg’s vet team discovered that she required surgery to remove an object from her nasal cavity.
Thanks to the foundations we'd already put in place, she recovered brilliantly.
Supporting her gut health, reducing dietary inflammation and working alongside her physiotherapist meant her body was in the best possible position to heal.
Just as importantly, Lesley knew exactly how to support Meg through recovery.
"I feel so much more confident and able to manage her. I know what to look out for and how to tweak things, and I know you're only a call away."
The Unexpected Bonus
One of the biggest surprises wasn't physical at all.
As Meg became healthier and more comfortable, her training flourished.
She became more focused, more engaged with her guardian, and far less likely to disappear into typical terrier distractions.
"Her training came along leaps and bounds. Her focus and attention was second to none."
When dogs feel better physically, they often find it much easier to learn, concentrate and enjoy life.
Prevention Is Always Better Than Cure
One of my favourite things about working with dogs like Meg is that we don't have to wait until they're seriously unwell before making meaningful changes.
By recognising the early signs of inflammation and supporting the body proactively, we can often prevent small concerns from becoming lifelong problems.
Nutrition isn't just about what goes into the bowl.
It's about supporting every system in the body so dogs can move well, think clearly, recover quickly and enjoy life to the fullest.
Meg being incredibly cute.
Could Your Dog Be Showing Similar Signs?
Many owners dismiss symptoms like:
Grass eating
Reflux
Face rubbing
Paw chewing
Mucousy stools
Low energy
Scooting
Mild itchiness
Head shaking
...as "normal."
In reality, they're often your dog's way of telling you that something isn't quite right.
By listening early, we can often make easy swaps for a huge impact on long-term health and wellbeing.
